(added last year!)

The celebration of International Migrants Day (IMD) aims to draw world attention to invaluable contributions made by millions of migrants to the progress and prosperity of their host countries and countries of origin. It also serves as a fitting venue for promoting the campaign to curb all kinds of abuse faced by migrants and their families, and respect for their dignity and basic human rights, by requesting governments around the globe intensity their efforts to safeguard the fundamental rights of migrant individuals.

The day is observed in various countries through the exchange of information on human rights and the fundamental rights of migrants, and the sharing of experiences and modes of action geared to promoting and upholding the interests of migrants. Comprising the millions of migrants scattered all over the world today are nurses, caregivers, social workers, writers, political refugees, construction workers, academics, and computer professionals, among many others. It was on December 18, 1990, that the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Basic Rights of Migrants Workers and their families. It was a historic achievement after almost 10 years of governmental dialogues and relentless endorsements by migrant groups around the world.

Filipino migrant workers have been called our “modern-day heroes” to underscore their sacrifice away from home and their invaluable contribution to our country and to their host countries where they provide their skills and expertise. They have also been called “Global Filipinos” to stress the fact that they have become responsive to the fast-evolving needs of the global community.

As we celebrate International Migrants Day, government and the private sector would do well to review relevant policies and ensure a more strict enforcement of laws that will protect our modern day heroes. They should embark on initiatives that will eventually provide viable local employment alternatives to our millions of Global Filipinos who would definitely prefer to serve our country and enjoy the comfort and security of being with their families.
