AJK holds press conference on World Rights Day

Posted in : Rights Day

(added last year!)

In 1950 United Nations General Assembly invited all States to observe 10th December as Human Rights Day (resolution 423 (V). The day marks the anniversary of the Assembly’s adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The object behind the observance of this day is to respect, protect and promote human rights for all. On this occasion, All Parties Hurriyat Conference, the political umbrella of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir, seeks attention of the Secretary General of United Nations, and the international community towards the
1. Massive and systematic human rights violations by in Indian forces occupied Kashmir, and the Indian denial to Kashmiris self-determination in light of UN resolutions. We ask the international community-Why we are being arrested and assaulted, tortured and killed? Why our children are being targeted and killed by Indian troops? The people of Jammu and Kashmir are simply demanding their promised birth right- right to self determination granted to them by the United Nations in the various resolutions and accepted by India too. Self determination has been declared as important as right to life. Human rights originate from the self determination. The enjoyment of human rights depends on the realization of the right to self determination.

Common Article 1, paragraph 1 of UN Covenants provides that "All peoples have the rights of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development." As a result, the right to self-determination is the cornerstone of the international world order and established human rights under the UN Charter. It is applicable to all peoples whose self-determination has been suppressed.

The Jammu and Kashmir is UN recognized disputed territory for which United Nations had passed numerous resolutions for final disposition of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the will of the people to be expressed in a free and fair plebiscite under the auspices of United Nations.

Despite Security Council resolutions, and the lapse of six decades, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been deprived of this right by the Government of India. In order to continue its occupation, the Indian Government had deployed more than 700,000 troops in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir which is the highest army concentration elsewhere in the world and these occupation forces have let loosed reign of terror. From January 1089 till 07 December 2010: 93,535    Kashmiri men women and children have been killed, 6,981 Custodial killings, 118,792 Civilians arrested, 107,396 Orphaned.

Kashmir had turned into a huge prison where everyone is under arrest. It's going bad to worse. It is practically an army concentration camp. Lethal and excessive use of force is being used by the Indian forces against peaceful precisionists in occupied Kashmir. Medical reports reveals that the dead bodies had received bullet injures mostly in head or heart. Kashmiri youth are subjected to target killings. Kashmiris are being picked up by the troops on streets and taken to unknown places and subjected to torture. Funeral processions have been attacked. From 11th June 2010 to December 2010, 122 unarmed peaceful precisionist have been killed by the Indian troops and 4456 injured. We have been kept under 75 day continuous curfew by the Indian administration. Indian administration had deliberately caused complete storage of food items and medicine.

The human right violations in Indian occupied Kashmir are so massive that in order to give legal cover to the abuses of its armed forces, the Government of India has enacted a series of black laws in Kashmir. These laws facilitate human rights violations. Shoot to kill at discretion has been granted to the Indian forces with complete protection against prosecution. This situation has drastically increased the human right violations in occupied Kashmir. On this occasion, I must tell you, once laws are enacted to facilitate human right violations, the violations are systematic.
