World Polio Day Observed by a Go at a World Record

Posted in : Polio Day

(added last year!)

The staff and residents of Golborne House on the Derby Road at Golborne saw an exciting event on the occasion of World Polio Day. A team of volunteers ranging from the residents of the house to staffers and Rotarians were a part of an attempt to shatter a world record.

The world record involved around a mass planting of 20,000 purple crocuses in the time span of an hour, with all the people participating in the event also donating a pound to the fight against polio. The reason why the plant of preference were purple crocuses was simple, well, because the flower is purple in color and the dye used to indicate that a child has been immunized against polio as well, is purple.

However the team met with failure and was not able to cross the world record. Though, the team did have a field day and was instrumental in being able to raise some money for the fight against polio.

The event was just not limited to the Golborne House; it was a part of a much bigger initiative that has been undertaken by the Rotary International for Great Britain and Ireland. The initiative in reality actually is a nationwide event that is also known as the “Big Bulb Plant”.
